ZETDC, ZESCO and SAPP Advance ZIZA Interconnector Discussions

13 March 2026 | Thiel Chizhande

Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) recently engaged with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) in Victoria Falls to advance discussions on the Zambia–Zimbabwe (ZIZA) Interconnector, a strategic infrastructure component of the broader ZIZABONA Project.

The meeting focused on aligning key project dimensions, including scope definition, technical design parameters, financing frameworks, and implementation strategies. This collaborative engagement reflects renewed momentum toward the realisation of a project whose foundations were laid under the Inter-Utility Memorandum of Understanding (IUMOU) signed in 2007. The ZIZA Interconnector remains a critical enabler of regional power system strengthening, designed to enhance transmission capacity, facilitate cross-border electricity trading, and improve grid stability within the Southern African Power Pool network. By reinforcing interconnectivity between national utilities, the project is expected to contribute significantly to addressing power supply challenges and optimising regional energy resources. Stakeholders underscored the importance of coordinated planning and investment mobilisation to accelerate project delivery, recognising the interconnector’s role in advancing energy security, operational efficiency, and market integration across Southern Africa. This engagement marks another significant milestone in fostering regional cooperation, with the ZIZA Interconnector poised to deliver long-term benefits through improved system reliability, enhanced energy exchange, and strengthened regional integration within the SAPP framework.
