Our Story

Following the enactment of the Electricity Act in 2002, which unbundled the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), ZPC was designated as the sole entity responsible for power generation in Zimbabwe. Its mandate includes the development, ownership, operation, and maintenance of power generation infrastructure to meet the nation's electricity demands.

Zimbabwe's power generation is predominantly based on hydroelectric and coal-fired sources. ZPC operates the Kariba South Hydropower Station and five thermal stations, including the Hwange Power Station—the largest coal-fired facility in the country—and smaller stations located in Bulawayo, Harare, and Munyati.

Power Generation Mandate

However, the smaller thermal stations have become increasingly obsolete, inefficient, and costly to maintain. In alignment with government policy, these plants are being decommissioned and evaluated for repurposing. The process includes disconnection from the grid and eventual demolition, followed by the exploration of alternative energy solutions and asset reuse strategies. These stations remain licensed by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) and are currently under care and maintenance as repurposing studies progress.

Corporate Social Responsibility

ZPC is deeply committed to its role as a responsible corporate citizen. Guided by its core values, ZPC actively contributes to the social and economic development of the communities in which it operates.

Education Initiatives

ZPC prioritizes educational empowerment, particularly for Zimbabwean youth. In Hwange, the company manages three schools—Megawatt Primary, Gebuza High, and Ingagula Primary—serving both employee families and the wider community. In Munyati, it operates both primary and secondary schools, ensuring equitable access to quality education for local children.

Healthcare Contributions

Healthcare Contributions
ZPC supports public health through various initiatives. At the Kariba Municipal Hospital, the company donated essential supplies and upgraded infrastructure, including electrification and perimeter security. It has also drilled four boreholes at Kariba South Power Station to address water shortages and constructed a new Dependency Clinic to serve employees and their families.

Further, ZPC has provided boreholes and electrified residences for traditional leaders in Hwange, Kariba, and Munyati, benefiting surrounding communities with improved access to clean water and electricity.

Infrastructure Development

ZPC has significantly contributed to local infrastructure, including the construction of the Ruia Bridge in Kariba, which enhanced community access to schools and healthcare. It also funded a new classroom block at Mahombekombe Secondary School, supporting improved learning conditions.

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has completed the construction of houses for the 72 families displaced to pave the way for the construction of the new 335km Hwange-Insukamini transmission line, under the Hwange Units 7 and 8 expansion project. The new transmission line passes through built-up areas in Bulawayo and Matabeleland North. The new resettlement houses built for displaced persons by ZPC offer improved living conditions as required by IFC Performance Standards.

Sports Development

ZPC promotes youth engagement and community pride through sports. It sponsors ZPC Kariba Football Club, which was promoted to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 2014, and ZPC Hwange FC, which partnered with Moors World of Sport FC in 2025. The merger signifies a forward-looking strategy for Zimbabwean football, combining MWOS FC's financial clout and PSL status with ZPC Hwange FC's deep community roots and expertise in grassroots football. This alliance ensures that ZPC Hwange FC remains an important contributor to the sport at the regional level, while MWOS FC benefits from the infusion of local talent and community support.

These initiatives foster local talent development, employment, and community unity.

Youth Empowerment

ZPC invests in the future through apprenticeship programs, graduate trainee opportunities, and internships. These initiatives equip young Zimbabweans with technical and professional skills, helping to build a resilient, skilled workforce for the nation's energy sector.
